oil on canvas

2011

Finished on the last day of the year. This was a commissioned piece that allowed me to follow my thematic interests. The building can be found on the Travessera de Dalt, on the nice walk uphill to the Park Güell from Lesseps station in Barcelona.

here at the frontier

Here at the frontier

Oil on canvas

137 x 107cm

2011

Here at the frontier there are falling leaves.
Although my neighbours are all barbarians,
And you, you are a thousand miles away,
There are always two cups on my table.

everything hoped for and more

 Oil and pencil on canvas

120 x 100 cm

2011

A commissioned painting. The brief was for a room looking out into a natural scene. I’d had a painting in mind for a while of a scene after an all-nighter, when at the dawn, one reaches a convivial state where inhibitions can be put aside, when nature unfolds and one’s moment on the earth is unchallenged.

day of the iguana

Oil, charcoal and pencil on canvas

120 x 100cm

2011

Commission. Initially I was asked for the perfect holiday picture, with no pointers as to what that might be. You’d think that I’d relish in the freedom, but it turned out to be impossible to paint. My idea of a perfect holiday isn’t going to be the same as anyone else’s, so after much handwringing and going down several dead ends, I asked for a starting point and was given “watermelons”. The painting followed quickly after that.

conversations in a room

Oil on canvas
120 x 100 cm
2009

Commission. Just about finished when this picture was taken. I was asked for something red with a cat in it. The title came from a conversation with a friend. We were talking about schizophrenics hearing voices, how the voices muttered away in the background while you’re going about your daily business, as though you were hearing a conversation in a room that went wherever you did. I thought that suited this image nicely.

the public house

(The Admiral Nelson Public House, Whitton, Middlesex)
Oil on canvas
120x100cm
2009

Commissioned for a gentleman’s 50th birthday, who used to work over the road at the butcher’s, some 25 years ago.

portrait of paul moses

Oil on Canvas
120cm x 90cm
2005

Commission. Paul had wanted a picture to show his sophisticated standing-around-with-a-pipe-sipping-cognac (or whatever it is you drink out of those glasses) kind of picture. The stockings were a happy accident while painting.

Did I dream you dreamed about me?
Were you hare when I was fox?
Now my foolish boat is leaning
Broken lovelorn on your rocks,
For you sing, ‘touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow:
O my heart, o my heart shies from the sorrow.’

Originally part of a larger painting that progressively went nowhere, I tore up the canvas and focussed on this section and it developed its own story.

Oil on Canvas.

Two years of work, on and off. I gotta learn how to paint faster.

This photograph was taken before the image was finished. The lady is now much more modestly covered.

Oil on Canvas.
90×70cm

This painting no longer exists, it was destroyed before I moved to Melbourne. I have tried several times to recreate it, to no avail. Another painting, “The Magus at Home”, uses the same source material.

This image popped up into my head as I was dozing on a hammock in Saigon. I was reading Carl Jung’s “Man and His Symbols” at the time.
